The Positive Deviance/ Hearth Approach is a proven community based nutrition rehabilitation program that sustainably addresses childhood malnutrition in resource poor settings. The approach identifies and shares solutions (practices) already being used by community members with well nourished children who have no access to special resources (positive deviants). Through identifying and using demonstrably successful local practices and resources and promoting behavior change by doing, caregivers and communities are empowered to take responsibility for nutritionally rehabilitating and maintaining good growth and health in their children. The PD/Hearth Approach can be implemented as a stand alone program but benefits greatly from established relationships and strengthened community and health structures when integrated into ongoing child survival or multi-sectoral development initiatives.
